XR Stories moves home to York’s historic Guildhall after £20 million refurbishment

XR Stories, alongside its sister project SIGN, has taken up residency in brand new office space within York’s historic Guildhall.

The two projects, which were previously based within the Ron Cooke Hub at the University of York’s campus, will now benefit from the new site’s city centre location as they continue their mission making Yorkshire and the Humber the UK’s centre for digital creativity, supporting companies within the region working in the screen industries and digital storytelling, and building a diverse and inclusive workforce in these sectors.

This new base provides the project teams with office space allowing for flexible desk working and meetings, as well as lab space to experiment with the latest cutting-edge digital technologies.

The Guildhall, which dates back to the 15th Century, reopened earlier this month following a £20 million refurbishment. In August 2021, the University of York signed a 15 year lease for the historic building, which will bring it back to the forefront of the city’s social, business and civic life. The building is now operated by York Science Park, a subsidiary of the University of York, which has facilitated and supported business start-ups and growth for 30 years, connecting companies with world-leading knowledge and expertise at the University of York.

Alongside offering office space to local businesses and start-ups, the restored building now provides space for events and community use, a new cafe and restaurant, and better access for visitors.
