XR Stories and SIGN at the Royal Geographical Society Conference

Research from XR Stories and SIGN will feature at the annual Royal Geographical Society conference taking place in London from 30 August to 1 September 2023.

Jon Swords, XR Stories and SIGN Research Lead, and Nina Willment, XR Stories Researcher, will chair two sessions on ‘The Screen Industries Future: Justice, Climate Change and Sustainability’.

With recent political messaging focused on economic growth rather than environmental issues, the sessions will explore how the creative industries can seriously engage with issues of climate change, environmental justice, circular economies and understandings of sustainability on and off screen.

Nina Willment and SIGN Researcher, Bethan Jones, will present new research on Virtual Production and ‘Balancing environmental sustainability and affective engagement in screen tourism locations’. Further presentations will focus on sustainability in the screen industries funded by XR Stories at albert and Bournemouth University, respectively.

XR Stories partners from York St John University and the University of Leeds will act as discussants for the sessions, encouraging debate about the topics presented and how the creative industries can think differently about how products and services are produced, distributed and consumed.

Visit the Royal Geographical Society website to register your online or in-person place at the conference.
