Sustainability behind the screens: Are things really changing?

Sustainability policy and action across the UK Film and TV production sector has developed rapidly over the past decade. Yet carbon emissions per hour of screened content increased by 33% between 2022 and 2023.

While some of this is down to more thorough data collection, it still points to a gap between the industry’s environmental policy intentions and on-set realities.

This briefing presents evidence from production crew members, sustainability specialists and policymakers alongside recommendations for the Film and TV production industry.

The briefing was prepared by Maisie Clegg as part of a dissertation for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Business of the Creative Industries from the University of York. The work was supervised by Professor Jon Swords, School of Arts and Creative Technologies, University of York.
