Unreal Engine Workshop (Harrogate)

2:00 pm - 18 Nov 2026

Mercer Art Gallery, 31 Swan Rd, Harrogate HG1 2SA

Learn how to use Unreal Engine as a powerful tool for digital pre-visualisation across applications such as filmmaking, animation, and digital twinning.

This workshop is part of the Extending XR programme, funded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and is open to adult residents in York and North Yorkshire.

About this event

Similar to traditional storyboarding, pre-visualisation offers a modern workflow for digitally planning physical production processes. Using Unreal Engine in this way can streamline production pipelines and enable high-fidelity previewing for real-world projects.

Get to grips with a range of tools within Unreal Engine to plan shots, dynamically light a scene and test different camera settings. By the end of the workshop you’ll have planned a short scene and rendered the output to a short video, complete with camera movements, lighting changes and edit points, taking away a solid grasp of Unreal Engine’s core pre-visualisation toolkit.

This workshop will help you to develop skills in the following Unreal Engine functionality:

  • Digitise shot planning: Set-up camera shots, edits, and cinematic content using Sequencer.
  • Simulate a real-world camera: Operate virtual cameras capable of simulating real-world camera properties and framing techniques using CineCamera.
  • Dynamic lighting: Use lighting tools to alter the feel and visual ambience of a digital scene.
  • Export a scene: Render a planned sequence out into a finished short video.

The workshop will use Unreal Engine 5.8 and participants are encouraged to bring a laptop with Unreal Engine installed to the session.

If you do not have a laptop, the XR Stories team will have a limited number of devices available to borrow during the session. Please indicate whether you need a laptop to be provided during the sign up.

Who this is for

This workshop is suitable for anyone wanting to explore how real-time digital content can be used to augment traditional media creation. While it will cover an introduction to Unreal Engine functionality, it is recommended that you have some background in digital media creation, either through your own work or through attending a previous Extending XR session (such as our 3D scanning, animation, and virtual world building workshops).

Accessibility

The Mercer Art Gallery is a wheelchair-accessible venue. Additional information about external and internal access at the venue is provided in the FAQ section. If you have any specific access requirements, please let us know when booking your ticket.

Travel expenses

Eligible participants (i.e. those who live in York and North Yorkshire) can claim back the cost of travel to and from the workshop. Please read the Extending XR travel expenses policy for more information about how to make a claim.
