Train the trainer workshop: Teaching 3D digital creation

10:00 am - 12 Aug 2026

Patch York, The Bonding Warehouse, Terry Ave, York YO1 6FA

This workshop is part of the Extending XR programme, funded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and is open to adult residents in York and North Yorkshire.

The workshop is designed to help participants build skills as a trainer to plan and deliver their own workshops using 3D creation software. It will also help participants learn how to generate digital content to augment existing lesson plans.

3D graphics software tools such as Blender are crucial for numerous applications including virtual world creation, training simulations and 3D scanning.

Building foundational skills in such software has the potential to open up career opportunities for students and adult learners in various industries including game development, film making, architecture and automotive.

The session will will cover:

  • Getting started with the transferable nature of 3D creation tools. This session will focus on Blender (free software to create 3D graphics), but will also demonstrate how the skills you will learn in Blender can be transferred to other 3D software tools such as Unity, Unreal and Autodesk Maya.
  • Getting comfortable with teaching the creation of a simple 3D world through a series of practical tasks. These will involve reflecting on some of the challenges when teaching a group of people, and considering a suitable structure.
  • Exploring a range of goals you may be designing a workshop for.
  • Experimenting with new knowledge in how to transform objects in a 3D scene, import a range of assets and improve lighting to create an effective scene for a project.
  • Planning and reflecting on a short activity using team-teaching to experience how to compile a fun, creative workshop.

At the end of the workshop participants will take away a planned workshop using Blender, along with a selection of 3D digital assets and resources.

Prior experience of using Blender or other 3D creation software is not required however if 3D modelling is entirely new to you, an awareness of digital media creation will be helpful.

The following YouTube videos introduce the software we will be using ahead of the session.

The workshop will take place between 10:00am and 2:30pm and there will be a 30 minute break from 12:00pm to 12:30pm. Tea, coffee and water will be available throughout the session but lunch will not be provided and so we recommend that participants bring their own food.
