R&D talk: Heritage and XR

3:00 pm - 30 Jul 2025

York Guildhall, St Martins Courtyard, Coney St, York YO1 9QL

Join us in the XR Stories office to hear speakers from academia and industry talk about their work applying eXtended Reality (XR) technologies and processes to find new ways of connecting audiences with the world of heritage.

Heng Song, a researcher within the University of York’s Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Global Heritage, will share his research on the ground-breaking BECAIVE project. BECAIVE focuses on the development of novel approaches to AI and interactive virtual heritage technology for cultural heritage preservation. Heng will relate how the project’s cutting-edge research has customised technological innovations and solutions (such as HeritageCAVE) to preserve endangered ancient Pyramids in Egypt, and connected it to its massive museum collections around the world.

Next up, University of York researcher Poppy Fynes will share her experience as an intern with XR Stories, working as part of a team to create a new interactive exhibit for the Captain Cook Museum in Whitby. This project recreated one of Captain Cook’s voyages as a game, designed for audiences visiting the museum. Poppy will share the team’s experience working to develop and create an entirely new digital exhibit.

Finally, Amanda Pearce and Shirley Harris will speak about their work as GeoStories, a company that has developed a mobile app which features location-based stories with Augmented Reality, audio, film and GPS triggers. Amanda and Shirley will discuss how they tie the app’s stories to a sense of historical place, their current project as XR Stories residents, and the important role that technology has to play around engaging audiences with heritage.
