Introduction to 3D scanning and character animation workshop (York)

Learn how to capture objects and people using 3D scanning technology and bring them to life in a virtual world.

This workshop is part of the Extending XR programme, funded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and is open to adult residents in York and North Yorkshire.

About this event

Learn how to bring objects and people to life using free 3D scanning and animation tools, and then connect them in Blender, a free, open-source 3D creation suite.

At this in-person, introductory workshop you’ll gain fundamental, transferable skills in character animation, creation, and rigging for use in your own creative digital media projects.

During the two hour intenstive session, you’ll capture real-world objects and people and import them into their digital worlds using a 3D scanning app. You’ll then explore how to apply animations to digital characters using free software tools.

What you will learn

• Getting started with 3D scanning: How to use Scaniverse to capture real-world objects and people, turning them into digital assets.
• Simple animation: How to use Mixamo to easily create and apply animations to 3D characters.
• Blender fundamentals: Mastering the basics of a game engine to integrate scanned objects and animated characters into Blender.

Who is this for?

This workshop is open to creative practitioners interested in getting started in 3D character animation and design. Prior experience with Blender or 3D modeling software is not required and this session is built to be accessible for beginners looking to take their first steps into creating a 3D world.
