The one hour workshop is designed to provide a fun introduction to 3D scanning objects and characters using free 3D scanning and animation tools and accessible devices. Suitable for between six and ten participants, no prior experience is required and all equipment is provided.
Extending XR is funded by the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority and this means that the workshop is open only to adult participants who are resident in York and North Yorkshire.
Essential information
- Adult learner training (18 years+).
- Open to residents in the York and North Yorkshire region.
- One hour workshop led by XR Stories’ creative technician.
- Suitable for groups of between six to ten participants.
- Delivery at festival and event locations in North Yorkshire.

Learning areas
- Exploring the Scaniverse app to undertake 3D scans in the festival/event location.
- Learning how to use Scaniverse to capture real-world objects and people, turning them into digital assets.
- Using Mesh2Motion to easily apply animations to 3D characters.
Key takeaways for participants
Participants will gain skills in capturing real-world objects and people using a 3D scanning app. They will then progress to adding basic animation to their scan to bring it to life.
The session will familiarise participants with the possibilities of 3D scanning without the dependency on state-of-the-art equipment, and develop their skillset for creating digital media projects.
Equipment
XR Stories will provide handheld devices such as iPads and smartphones for up to ten participants in the session. If you have devices you would prefer to use, our delivery team can talk to you about what is possible.
Trainer
Joe Rees-Jones is a creative technologist with XR Stories at the University of York. Joe supports small businesses, students and researchers working in the creative industries to elevate the digital side of their projects. Joe’s expertise encompasses virtual production technologies (e.g. motion capture, game engines), immersive audiovisual applications and spatial audio.
