Extending XR digital skills workshop: Introduction to TouchDesigner

From 4pm to 6pm on Friday 1 May 2026, the team from XR Stories will deliver an Introduction to TouchDesigner workshop at Patch York.

TouchDesigner is a versatile software used for real-time interactive multimedia, 3D rendering, and visual effects. It allows artists, designers, and programmers to create interactive installations, projections, and live performances by connecting operators without needing traditional coding.

During the workshop, participants will build a foundational understanding of the TouchDesigner software by collectively generating a new piece of digital artwork in a relaxed, group environment.

Participants will spend time making, creating and discussing the process/sharing learnings. At the end of the workshop, creative outputs will be shared to a large screen for participants to continue discussions during drinks and networking.

The workshop forms part of the next Digital Arts Meet Up (DAMU), a new meet up for York supported by XR Stories, York Creatives and the Guild of Media Arts that aims to support and develop artistic practice that involves digital technology, and artwork that can be installed, exhibited, and toured, in public spaces, galleries and museums.

Pre-workshop requirements

To maximise use of time in the workshop, all participants are required to complete the free online  TouchDesigner Fundamentals course before attending (https://learn.derivative.ca/courses/100-fundamentals/). The online course consists of a series of five minute videos on each topic (roughly two hours of self-led prep work).

Participants are also required to bring their own laptop to the workshop with TouchDesigner 2023.11340 or newer installed (TouchDesigner works on both Windows and Mac).

Workshop eligibility and funding

This free workshop is part of the Extending XR creative technology skills development programme. Extending XR is delivered by XR Stories and funded by the Mayor’s Skills Innovation Fund. The workshop is open to adults who live in York and North Yorkshire and who are looking to develop their skills in creative technology.
